September 2019 Newsletter

It’s hard to believe that we recently celebrated our first anniversary at Ribble Valley Yoga.  Signing the lease from 1st August 2018 we set to work getting the studio ready, pulling in support from our families to ensure we could start to deliver our classes in September 2018.  It was a slightly anxious time – would we get enough students to engage with Iyengar yoga?  We needn’t have worried as the Ribble Valley community has been extremely welcoming and supportive.

We’ve had over 200 students accessing our classes.  We’ve delivered a number of free taster sessions, introductory courses, classes for beginners and the more experienced student, slower paced classes, and more recently, classes for local schools, teens and smaller children.  We’ve also held a small number of workshops, some pregnancy yoga classes and done some private coaching.

We would like to say a big thank you for supporting our first year at RVY and our aim to share with others the benefits of Iyengar yoga.

To mark our first anniversary, and to thank you for your support over the past year, we would like to offer a discount on an 8 week class pass for current and returning students.

Use code HAPPYBIRTHDAY to buy an 8-week class pass at the reduced rate of £48 (standard rate £56).

This is a single use code and is for use on new 8 week class passes only purchased between 2nd September and 9th November 2019.

Please check out our class timetable on the website www.ribblevalleyyoga.co.uk

Reflections on the last 12 months

Iyengar Yoga Convention – Harrogate – September 2018

Heather attended the IY (UK) Annual Convention in Harrogate last September.  Four 4 UK teachers, (Julie Brown, Jayne Orton, Margaret Austin and Trica Booth), 2 of whom were designated as the “most senior in the UK” by Guruji himself, led the main sessions for 500 participants.  There were sessions on special subjects such as: learning to develop your personal practice, Iyengar Yoga for back pain and exploring the Mother and Father of Asanas (headstand and shoulder stand).

Iyengar Yoga teachers have to attend continued professional development days, the annual convention or visit the Institute in Pune, India to maintain their teaching certificate but it’s also a great way to catch up with yoga practitioners and gain new insights to share with our students at Ribble Valley Yoga.

BKS Iyengar’s 100th Birthday Celebrations

Helen was very fortunate to spend the month of December 2018 in Pune for the centenary celebrations of BKS Iyengar’s birth.  It was an amazing experience, with over 1000 students travelling from 56 countries to be taught by Prashant and Geeta Iyengar.  It was very poignant that that Geeta Iyengar passed away just a few days after the celebrations ended and Helen is very grateful to have had direct experience of her clear, compassionate but challenging teaching.

Rope Wall installation

Heather in the ropes

We are continuing to add to the facilities at RVY and the new rope wall was installed recently, the ropes themselves travelling all the way from India, thanks to Helen, who placed the order whilst she was there last December.

Workshops

We have enjoyed teaching a number of Sunday workshops this year and plan to develop this in the coming months with visiting teacher workshops alongside our own Pranayama, Restorative and Intermediate sessions. Keep an eye on the website for details. We can also be found on social media, if that’s your thing…

Photo Shoot May 2019

We are both members of the Bradford and District (BDIY) and the Manchester and District Iyengar (MDIY) Institutes and we were happy to welcome BDIY teaching colleagues to our studio to host a photo shoot, the resulting images to be used to support the promotion of their Iyengar yoga classes.  Heather had a few snaps done too!

All students who attend RVY are able to join the regional associations and benefit from reduced workshops, a supportive community and information about Iyengar yoga.  Take a look at the websites if you are interested.

Again, many thanks to everyone who has supported us over the past year.  We look forward to the coming months of teaching and practicing Iyengar Yoga with you!  See you on the mat

Some news just in.  We were contacted some months ago to support a UCLAN project into the potential use of yoga classes for individuals with Breast Cancer Related Lymphoedema (BCRL) in East Lancashire.  The university has just advised that the survey has now had ethical approval.  The aim of this research project is to explore the thoughts and opinions from Lancashire based individuals aged 18 and over who have or have had breast cancer previously, in order to explore the potential use of yoga as a treatment method for BCRL.  If the survey may be of interest to you or someone you know then please share the links below.

Further details are given in this recruitment poster. The survey can be accessed at https://uclan.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/bcrl-yoga
